Pros: First ingredient is a named meat product, primarily good quality ingredients
Cons: Questionable meat content

Unlike the original formula of this food which had four named meat products (2 meal) heading the ingredient list, this revised formula appears to have a reduced meat content.

The first ingredient in this food remains a named meat product, but is meat inclusive of its water content (about 80%) and once that is removed it is likely that this ingredients would be more accurately placed somewhat further down the ingredient list (ingredients are listed in order of weight).

The true first ingredient is likely now to be rice. The presence of a two meat ingredient next on the list, this time in meal form, gives us some confidence in the amount of meat product in the food but we find it difficult to believe that it is not reduced from the original.

The main grains in the food are rice, oats and barley. Oats are a good source of carbohydrate energy and B vitamins. Rice is low-allergenic and a high quality source of carbohydrates and additional protein, barley is also a good quality grain. Our concern is aroused solely in respect of the amount of grain this food appears to contain. Flaxseed is fibre and an excellent source of Omega 6 and Omega 3 essential fatty acids. There is a good range of fruits/vegetables in the food, and a good range of probiotics.

We note that the manufacturer retains on their website a statement warranting the use of 48-52% meat meal in their foods, which is certainly one of the highest around. This is not well supported by the ingredient listing however, and we retain some doubt. The food retains its 5* rating on the strength of that statement, but we consider the revised product to be inferior to the original version.
