The first ingredient is a meat meal product but is not one named by species. Despite being indicated by proportion, this is a concern as it makes it impossible to identify the source, quality or consistency of the ingredient. Ingredients of unidentifiable source are usually very low quality, cheap ingredients and are not found in higher quality products. There is a second meat ingredient 4th on the ingredient list. We note this is a fish meal ingredient, but are unable to locate any guarantee by the manufacturer that this ingredient is free of ethoxyquin. Ethoxyquin is a chemical preservative commonly added to fish ingredients destined for pet foods and which is banned from use in human foods because it is believed to be carcinogenic. We recommend careful checking of the packaging for any such guarantee (specific to this ingredient).
The main grains in the food are corn, rice and wheat. Corn is of limited value in dog food. It is a difficult to digest grain and commonly associated with food allergies. Rice is a decent quality grain, but wheat is believed by many to be the leading cause of food allergies in dog food. Poultry fat is an ingredient of unidentified origin for which it is impossible to determine source or quality. Unidentified ingredients are usually very low quality. AAFCO define this as obtained from the tissues of poultry in the commercial processes of rendering or extracting. It consists predominantly of glyceride esters of fatty acids and contains no additions of free fatty acids. If an antioxidant is used, the common name or names must be indicated, followed by the words "used as a preservative". The product packaging indicates the use of naturally occuring preservatives.
De-oiled grape seeds are filler (and we note that grapes are toxic to dogs). Beet fibre is beet pulp, a controversial filler. It is a by-product, being dried residue from sugar beets which has been cleaned and extracted in the process of manufacturing sugar. It is a controversial ingredient in dog food, claimed by some manufacturers to be a good source of fibre, and derided by others as an ingredient added to slow down the transition of rancid animal fats and causing stress to kidney and liver in the process. We note that beet pulp is an ingredient that commonly causes problems for dogs, including allergies and ear infections, and prefer not to see it used in dog food. There are less controversial products around if additional fibre is required.
Overall, this product is somewhat light in meat content, and uses meat and fat ingredients of unidentifiable origin. Although the meat content is probably higher than some others in this range and in this category, the use of low quality ingredients is too prolific for this product to be rated above 2*.
