Pros: First ingredient is a named meat product
Cons: Insuffient meat content, mixed quality ingredients

The first ingredient in the food is a named meat product, in meal form. There is a further meat meal ingredient 7th on the ingredient list, but this is too far down to make a substantial contribution to the overall meat content of the food. It is a fish meal ingredient, but we find no guarantee on the manufacturers website that protein sources are ethoxyquin-free (ethoxyquin is a chemical preservative commonly added to fish destined for meal, and is believed to be carcinogenic).

The main grains are rice and barley. The whole forms are decent quality but rice gluten is not. Rice Gluten is the dried residue from rice after the removal of the larger part of the starch and germ, and the separation of the bran by the process employed in wet milling, or by enzymatic treatment of the endosperm. In plain English, that bit of the rice leftover after most of the nutritious bits have been removed. There are further grain fragments (filler) amongst the minor ingredients. Chicken fat is the fourth ingredient. We note that research at Purdue university has identified fat in the top four ingredients of dry food as a factor increasing the risk of bloat in large breed dogs. Smaller breeds are untested.

There are no fruits/vegetables in the food and no probiotics. We appreciate the inclusion of whole eggs in the food. Note that this manufacturer does not include synthetic vitamin K.
