Pros: First ingredient is a named meat product.
Cons: Insufficient meat content, use of low quality meats of unidentifiable origin, low quality grains.

The first ingredient in this food is a named meat product in meal form. There is a second meat meal ingredient 6th on the ingredient list which is a very low quality product - meat meal. We would avoid any product using unidentifiable ingredients such as this, the definition of which is "the rendered product from mammal tissues, exclusive of blood, hair, hoof, horn, hide trimmings, manure, stomach and rumen contents except in such amounts as may occur unavoidably in good processing practices".

Fish meal is the 9th ingredient. This is too far down the ingredient list to make a substantive contribution to the overall meat content of the food. We can find no sign of a guarantee on the manufacturers site that this ingredient is ethoxyquin-free (ethoxyquin is a chemical preservative commonly added to fish meals and that is banned from use in human food because it is believed to be carcinogenic).

The main grains in the food are rice and corn. It is probable that the combined rice ingredients, if not split, would supplant chicken meal as the true first ingredient in the food. Brewers rice is a low quality waste product. The use of corn is a significant negative as this is a difficult to digest grain and commonly the cause of allegy problems.

Tomato pomace is filler, but we appreciate the use of whole eggs and a range of pre and pro-biotics in the food.
