The first ingredient in the food is maize (corn). Corn is a low quality grain for use in dog food, being difficult to digest and a common cause of allergy problems. Moreover, the leading ingredient in any dog food should be meat, not cereal.
The second and third ingredients are both named meat products in meal form. Combined, they account for only 20% of the total food. There is a third meat product - poultry meal - 5th on the ingredient list, bringing the total meat content up to 25%. Poultry meal, however, is a low quality meat product for which is it impossible to ascertain the source. With regard to the salmon meal, we can find no sign of a guarantee on the manufacturers site that this ingredient is ethoxyquin-free (ethoxyquin is a chemical preservative commonly added to fish meals and that is banned from use in human food because it is believed to be carcinogenic).
Sugar beet molasses adds unnecessary sugar to the food, and is likely to contribute to yeast infections in dogs prone to those.
Poultry fat is a further low quality ingredient for which it is impossible to determine the source. Unidentified ingredients are usually very low quality. AAFCO define this as "obtained from the tissues of poultry in the commercial processes of rendering or extracting. It consists predominantly of glyceride esters of fatty acids and contains no additions of free fatty acids. If an antioxidant is used, the common name or names must be indicated, followed by the words "used as a preservative".
