Inadequate meat content, use of by-products, grains and fillers of the lowest possible quality

The first ingredient in this food is ground corn. Corn is a difficult to digest grain, which limits its nutritional value for dogs. We consider this to be a low quality ingredient. It is also commonly associated with allergy and skin problems. Just as importantly, this is the main ingredient in the food - a grain, whereas dog food should be based on meat.
The are no real meat products in this food at all. The closest is chicken by-product meal, a very low quality ingredient which is defined as "consisting of the ground, rendered, clean parts of the carcass of slaughtered chicken, such as necks, feet, undeveloped eggs and intestines, exclusive of feathers, except in such amounts as might occur unavoidable in good processing practice".
Flaxseed is a useful addition, but this is followed by more waste products. Soybean Mill Run is the ground hulls (outer shell) of soybeans after the useful bean meat and oil has been extracted. This food also contains peanut hulls - making it appear more of a means of waste disposal than dog food. Brewers rice is a further by-product of very low quality. Soybean meal, the ground remains of soybeans after extraction of oil, provides additional low quality protein to the food. We prefer not to see the use of any form of soy in dog food as this is an ingredient of low quality and commonly causing allergy problems.
We would prefer to see the use of whole eggs rather than egg product in the food.
Overall, we consider this to be a very low quality product. It contains no quality meat at all, instead relying on low grade meat and soy by-products to provide a level of crude protein that is below the AAFCO macronutrient profile for adult maintenance. Most of the ingredients used in this food are waste products (consider floor sweepings). The food has been given a 2-star rating, but would be amongst the lowest quality in this class and a 1-star rating was strongly considered.
